Frequently Asked Questions
Masuda Middle School Music Program
How long is my music elective class?
The music classes here at Masuda are year-long elective classes. It is a one full year commitment unlike other elective classes on campus which are only one trimester. We ask you to be committed to the school band, the orchestra or the choir for one full year after which time you may choose to continue or choose a different elective class for the next school year instead. There is no changing your class schedule after the 2nd week of school. By then, it is too late to change.
What instruments can I play?
Beginning band students will start on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or percussion. Beginning string students will start on violin, viola, cello, or bass. Advanced symphony students have a few more options like tuba, tenor sax, bari sax, french horn, bass clarinet, oboe, piccolo, or bassoon.
Do I need to purchase an instrument right away?
No. I will guide you though the process of selecting an appropriate instrument by inviting you to our Rental Night in September at 6:00PM here at Masuda. At Rental Night, you will have the option to rent or purchase a teacher approved instrument at the best prices available. Please come to Rental Night to get detailed information about instruments, accessories, and equipment that will be helpful to all those seeking an instrument.
What if I can’t afford an instrument?
I will help you find an instrument! If you want to be in band, we will find a way for you to participate! We have a few instruments available to use through our school. If you need financial assistance, please contact me and we'll get it worked out. There are also scholarship instruments awarded to deserving kids who's families are experiencing financial difficulties. To inquire about scholarship instruments, please email your music teacher for more information.
What if I don’t know how to read music?
That’s normal and definitely not a problem. We start at the beginning level and teach you everything you need to know!
